National Science CentreSummary
Today’s telecommunications backbone networks are powered on even during low traffic periods, and consume non-negligible amounts of energy. Several algorithms have been proposed in the literature to dynamically calculate network configuration depending on changing traffic demands, so that some devices can be powered off (or put into sleep mode) during low traffic periods to decrease energy consumption. We study the influence of changes of spatial traffic distribution entering the backbone IP-over-WDM network on the potential level of savings that can be achieved with the above-mentioned algorithms. Additionally, an extension of the known algorithms working in the IP layer is planned within the project, so that they consider physical layer constraints as well as protection requirements against failures in telecommunications backbone networks.Publications, reports or patents resulting from the project
